Gears of War: Judgment features two campaigns, Epic Games has announced.

The main campaign takes place 14 years before the original Gears of War in the city of Halvo Bay, and follows the plight of Lieutenant Baird who is on trial accused of war crimes.

A second campaign, titled Aftermath, is unlocked after the first is fully complete, and fills out the story of Gears of War 3.

Taking place 27 years after Judgment, it reveals what Baird and Cole were doing at Halvo Bay while Marcus and Dom were fighting the Locust Queen.

Unlike the brighter and more colourful Judgment, Aftermath mimics the look of Gears of War 3 – “when things were bleak” said lead level designer Jim Brown.

"We wanted to do something that added context to the game, so you had that beginning part, but then this ties everything together with the main trilogy as well," said Brown.

"So you'll see when you go in there some people you recognise, some places, maybe even some enemies and then see how the two storylines weave together in the context of the whole franchise."

"Obviously we don't want to give away too many spoilers in how it's going to end or what you're going to see," he added.

"But the basic gist of it is that when they're at the fort, Marcus sends Barrett and Cole off to find supplies and reinforcements, and then he goes off to Azura.

“Then at the very end they show up with helicopters. This is where they went and what they did on that mission."

Aftermath would provide a nice bookend to the game, and shows the full effect of the Locust invasion, said Brown.

Gears of War: Judgment is out March 19 on Xbox 360.
