League of Legends is now an official sport at Unigames, Riot Games has announced.
The university sports league, open to Australian and New Zealand club teams, will add the popular e-sport game to its list of 39 existing athletic sports.
Play will consist of four stages, beginning in June with inter-university tournaments, progressing through regionals and nationals, and leading up to the Australian University Games from 25-30 September.
Riot Games Oceania's head of e-sports Daniel Ringland said that the addition marked "an exciting time for League of Legends players as esports becomes more widely recognised as a competitive sport."
For the Unigames, Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp says "the student engagement opportunities that result from the rapidly increasing popularity of esports across campuses in Australia has certainly grabbed our attention."
Players can find their university's League of Legends club at the Riot website.
