Blizzard isn’t expecting World of Warcraft to grow again.

The game’s subscriber numbers peaked in 2010 at 12 million, and have been steadily sliding ever since. They currently stand at 6.8 million.

“We really don’t know if it will grow again,” lead game designer Tom Chilton told MCV.

“It is possible, but I wouldn’t say it’s something that we expect.

“Our goal is to make the most compelling content we can.”

Blizzard is still hopeful the game’s upcoming expansion, Warlords of Draenor, will bring back lapsed players.

“By building expansions, you are effectively building up barriers to people coming back,” Chilton added.

“But by including the level 90 character with this expansion, it gives people the opportunity to jump right into the new content.”

Warlords of Draenor releases on November 13 for Windows PC and Mac.
