The new SimCity offline mode is in the "final stages of testing", reports developer Maxis.

The modes comes as a part of Update 10.

“When we launch it, all of your previously downloaded content will be available to you anytime, anywhere, without the need for an internet connection,” wrote Patrick Buechner, general manager of the Maxis Emeryville studio, on the SimCity blog when the feature was first announced.

“In Update 10, you can still play solo in Regions on your own, or in Multiplayer with people from around the world. What’s new is the singleplayer mode, which allows you to play the game Offline by yourself. And because your saved games in this mode are stored locally, you can save and load to your heart’s content.”

Following a disastrous launch, SimCity was widely criticised for requiring an Internet connection.

Amid the outrage, Maxis claimed that an offline mode was “just not possible”, despite claims to the contrary.

With the appearance of a mod that allowed offline play, the company finally admitted that an offline mode was possible, but that it did not fit with its vision for the game.
