A StarCraft mod that transforms the game into an MMO-style RPG is seeking funds on Kickstarter.

StarCraft Universe is a free-to-play mod for StarCraft II that only requires the free starter edition of Blizzard’s celebrated RTS to play.

It even has the approval of the Warcraft developer, which insisted only on a name change from World of StarCraft in 2011.

“While Blizzard is not directly affiliated with this project's production, we do communicate with them to submit bug reports and make technical requests,” said developer Upheaval Arts.

“They have given their blessing/permission for us to launch this Kickstarter, and they are supporting our efforts by featuring SCU as an Arcade Highlight.”

A StarCraft Universe beta singleplayer campaign for has been available since February of this year, but now funds are being sought for the game’s multiplayer mode.

If funded, the game will feature eight character classes across the terran and protoss, a persistent world, “hundreds” of customisible weapons, vehicles and multi-passenger vehicular combat, crafting, an ability upgrade system, an original soundtrack, and more.

Stretch goals include a zerg character class and a MOBA-inspired player-versus-player zone.

According to the game’s Kickstarter page, “StarCraft Universe tells a story set in an alternate reality, where the ending of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty has a grim conclusion for Kerrigan.

“Without the Queen of Blades to stop the hybrid’s assault, the protoss are overwhelmed and defeated. In this reality, what would the survivors of these shattered worlds do? StarCraft Universe tells this story.”

StarCraft Universe will be released as a series of custom games published through Battle.net.

At the time of writing, the project has raised US$6,893 of a US$80,000 (AU$87,539) goal with 29 days to go.
