Anthem lead producer Ben Irving leaves BioWare

Anthem lead producer Ben Irving leaves BioWare

Anthem lead producer Ben Irving is parting ways with BioWare for an "exciting opportunity at another gaming company."

"I will forever be grateful to all the people who gave me the chance to work on great products with amazing people," wrote Irving. "I believe Anthem has a bright future - there is a great team working on it and I look forward to following its progress (and playing it!) from the sidelines.

"I have really enjoyed interacting with the Anthem community - Streams, Twitter and Reddit. Through the good times and the tough times. You all are in great hands with [Jesse Anderson] and [Andrew Johnson] (and have been for some time now). I wish nothing but the best for all of you."

Irving's departure comes just after the game launched its long-promised Cataclysm event as part of patch 1.3 that brought some much-needed end game content to Anthem.

From launch, Anthem faced an uphill battle, plagued by server issues, bugs, and a lack of content to keep players invested. Despite this, Bioware doubled down, promising to stay "100% committed" to the game going forward.

Dead Island 2 development now with Dambuster Studios

Dambuster Studios has become the latest developer to take a swing at zombie action title, Dead Island 2.

Dead Island 2 was first announced at E3 2014 with Spec Ops: The Line developer, Yager at the helm. The studio was removed from the project mid 2015 due to "creative differences," resulting in Sumo Digital taking over development in early 2016.

But after three years and no game, it seems publisher THQ Nordic is out of patience, giving Dambuster Studios the role of both lead developer for the game, and the franchise overall.

Need for Speed Heat revealed

Following a countdown clock teaser, Ghost Games has revealed Need for Speed Heat, the next entry in veteran racing series.

Ghost Games released a trailer Heat today, showcasing the series continued focus on high-performance street racing and avoiding the long arm of the law. In Heat players will race across the fictional town of Palm City and take part in both sanctioned competitions called the Speedhunters Showdown and illegal underground racing.

It wouldn't be a modern NFS game without some B-grade movie story about police corruption, and Ghost Games look to be doubling down on the drama for the next entry.

Skater XL is coming to Xbox One

Skater XL is coming to Xbox One

Fans have been begging for a new entry in the Skate franchise for years now to no avail. Thankfully, Easy Day Studios has seen a glaring gap in gaming for a new skateboarding title. The studio today announced that Skater XL; a game that has been on Steam Early Access for some time now, is coming to the Xbox One in 2020.

Fans have only been able to shred up the L.A. Civic Center but will soon be able to take their favourite deck to a second location based on a Southern California skatepark.

Along with the Xbox release announcement, Easy Day also confirmed that character creation is also being added to the game. Being developed by a very small team, Skater XL may not have a wealth of content yet, but the framework for a solid skating sim is well in place.

The studio recently held a mo-cap session with Walker Ryan and is implementing some impressive photogrammetry technology to ensure the player character responds and moves as believably as possible.

Mojang cancels Minecraft Super Duper Graphics Pack

Announced during E3 two years ago, the Minecraft Super Duper Graphics Pack would introduce higher textures and other graphical improvements to the massively popular block-building game. The update was initially meant to launch in 2017 but unfortunately saw several delays.

It seems these delays did not help Mojang bring the project to completion. Mojang announced the cancellation today in a blog post, stating that "the pack proved too technically demanding to implement as planned".

The studio went on to say "We realise this is disappointing to some of you – there was a lot of enthusiasm for Super Duper from inside and outside the studio – but unfortunately, we aren’t happy with how the pack performed across devices. For this reason, we're stopping development on the pack, and looking into other ways for you to experience Minecraft with a new look".

Australian Classifications Board seeking to ban DayZ

After refusing classification to physical copies of DayZ last week, the Australian Classification Board (ACB) is now working to ban all versions of the game for its promotion of cannabis use.

"Through general gameplay, the player is able to collect and use a variety of equipment, supplies and weaponry," noted the ACB in its report. "One of the options to restore the player's health is a marijuana joint, labelled 'cannabis', which is denoted by a cannabis bud in the player's inventory.

"The use of drugs (marijuana) as an incentive or reward during the gameplay exceeds what can be accommodated within the R18+ classification and therefore must be Refused Classification," the report said.
