Former BioWare veteran spearheads new studio for Wizards of the Coast

Former BioWare veteran spearheads new studio for Wizards of the Coast

Wizards of the Coast, the folks responsible for Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons have announced that it is opening a new studio, to be lead by former BioWare creative director, James Ohlen.

During his time at BioWare, Ohlen worked on some of the studios biggest series including KOTOR, Dragon Age, and Baldur's Gate, but left the studio last year, stating that he needed to spend some time out of the game industry.

Speaking with Gamesindustry.biz, Ohlen stated "I had pretty well turned down most opportunities for interviews to get back into the industry, but I talked to Wizards of the Coast president Chris Cocks, and he gave me a scenario that was very intriguing and interesting, so I flew up to Seattle and sat down with Wizards of the Coast for six hours of interviews. It was like the scene out of The Godfather where it was an offer that was too good to refuse."

Obviously, it's too early to announce what the new studio will be working on, but Ohlen says "I think it's more personal than the projects I was working on in the latter half of my career at BioWare/EA," and that "the first step is to build a franchise that will endure, like Magic and D&D, and we'll figure out the right platforms for that world to express itself over the years to come."

Wizards have had a solid run recently, seeing increasing popularity in Magic: The Gathering Arena. Being the massive MTG fan I am, I'm intrigued to see what this new studio has cooking.

Microsoft unveil Xbox One S All-Digital Edition

During the latest episode of Inside Xbox, Microsoft pulled back the curtain on its first Digital-only Xbox One.

The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition strips the disc drive, making it the first current-gen console to entirely forgo physical media options.

Microsoft announced that the console will come with three pre-installed games: Forza Horizon 3. Sea of Thieves and Minecraft, making the USD$250 (about AUD$ 350) price point quite the bargain when factoring in the individual cost of the games included.

Talking with Josh Horowitz from MTV News, Kennedy replied to a question about KOTOR saying "You know, we talk about that all the time."

"Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now I have no idea where things might fall, but we have to be careful that there is a cadence to Star Wars that doesn't start to feel like too much."

Sony reveals first details for the PlayStation 5

The first confirmed details for Sony's next console have been revealed by Mark Cerny in an interview with Wired.

Cerny, who served as lead system architect for the PlayStation 4, has taken up the mantle again for Sony's next console and was quick to note that it would not see a 2019 release.

When discussing technical specifications for the upcoming system, Wired writes:

The CPU is based on the third generation of AMD’s Ryzen line and contains eight cores of the company’s new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. The GPU, a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi family, will support ray tracing, a technique that models the travel of light to simulate complex interactions in 3D environments. While ray tracing is a staple of Hollywood visual effects and is beginning to worm its way into high-end processors and Nvidia's recently announced RTX line, no game console has been able to manage it. Yet.

The specs for this system mean support for 8K graphics, while ray tracing would offer implementation in sound design for games in addition to visual spectacles.
