At this year's Game Awards event, NetherRealm Studios Director and Mortal Kombat ko-founder Ed Boon made an appearance on stage to give an award, which quickly turned out to be a surprise announcement for Mortal Kombat 11.

The ultra-violent trailer shows an evil (red lighting always = evil) Raiden duking it out with a slightly different looking Scorpion in a vicious bout that ends with our favourite yellow ninja a little light-headed and decidedly dead. Suddenly another Scorpion appears wearing his classic costume as he proceeds to rip poor Raiden to shreds. The trailer then cuts to a mysterious character with a giant sand hour-glass, so it's highly likely we'll be seeing some more time-bending tomfoolery first introduced in 2011's series reboot.

“It’s exciting to finally announce Mortal Kombat 11 and showcase what the team has been working on,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “Our Custom Character Variation System opens up an infinite amount of options for players to personalize their favorite fighters. We can’t wait until January when we’ll be showing more of the game.”

Check out the trailer below. Warning: You may want to mute depending on your 'music' taste though...
