Realm Royale, a new Battle Royale spin-off of Hi-Rez Studios arena shooter Paladins, has hit Steam Early Access and is available to play right now.
With a strong focus on team play, rounds in Realm Royale start with players selecting one of five traditional fantasy classes. Each class offers a unique play style, with Assassins planting Sensor Drones to scout for their teammates, while Warriors can toss Shielding Potions to protect squishy Hunters. Mages can soar above the battlefield and bombard opponents with fireballs and Engineers deploy turrets and shields in typical hero shooter-style combat.
“Realm Royale’s class-based, ability-driven combat brings a new experience to the battle royale genre,” said Rory “Drybear” Newbrough, Realm Royale Executive Producer. “It’s a battle royale that feels like the perfect mixture of an open-world PvP MMO and your favourite hero shooter.”
Similar to other titles in the Battle Royale genre, rounds start with 100 players dropping from a giant zeppelin into a beautiful fantasy-inspired map full of goblin villages, mushroom forests and heaps of unique locations to discover on your travels. As the common enemy, dreaded fog closes, forcing players to act fast and loot weapons and abilities from chest scattered throughout the map. Player customization allows players to invest their time into kitting out the perfect looking hero. In a welcome twist on the genre, Realm Royale allows players to summon a mount at any time to quickly cover ground get back into the action.
Forges scattered throughout the map become contested areas of conflict as players craft epic Legendary Weapons, fight for control or look to stealthily steal weapons, driving action throughout the match.
Realm Royale wont see you hiding in any bushes for half the match as “you can’t win a round of Realm Royale by hiding in a bathtub,” Newbrough said. “Gameplay elements like Forges reward players for staying active and taking risks.”
Realm Royale started life as “Paladins: Battlegrounds,” announced in January at the annual Hi-Rez Expo as a new mode for the hit hero shooter Paladins. After seeing positive feedback to the mode’s announcement, Hi-Rez Studios spun off Realm Royale as a standalone game with a larger scope.
