Sega has announced a new cart racer in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe.

Team Sonic Racing is in development at Sumo Digital, the studio behind 2012’s fantastic Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and 2010’s competent Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing.

The marquee feature of Team Sonic Racing is that it allows players to work together as a team by sharing power-ups and speed boosts, and by firing off something called a Team Ultimate.

There are three distinct character types to choose from (Speed, Technique, and Power), 15 playable characters, 14 offensive and defensive items, and performance and skin customisations.

There is also online multiplayer for up to 12, local co-op for up to four in split screen, and various modes including Grand Prix, Exhibition, Time-Trial, Team Adventure, and a story mode to introduce new players to the series.

Team Sonic Racing is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC in summer.
