Hardcore action RPG The Surge is getting a sequel in 2019.

Publisher Focus Home Interactive today announced that it is once again joining forces with Deck 13 for The Surge 2, which will release on consoles and PC.

The Surge 2 will apparently greatly expand on the limb targeting combat of the first game, and is set in a sprawling, devastated city with larger and more ambitious level design made possible by Deck13’s upgraded and improved engine.

There will be more abilities, weapons, implants, and drones and an array of new enemies and bosses.

The Surge released to consoles and PC last May, but didn't manage to capture the best qualities of its main influences, the Souls games.

"The Surge is an awkward experience. At its best, it's a decent action-RPG, which might be able to fill the void if Nioh and Dark Souls III's DLC left you hungry for more," wrote Gameplanet reviewer Leo Rae-Brown in his review.

"But at its worst, it's a lightning round of 'dodge the stunlock' as you struggle against spastic, buggy enemies.

"It feels frustrating for the wrong reasons, and doesn't play to its strengths – there's a good game hidden in here somewhere, but the combat balancing and level design will do everything in their power to hinder your enjoyment."
