It was Project Copernicus rather than Kingdoms of Amalur that sank 38 Studios, a former Big Huge Games employee has claimed.

The Rhode Island-based studio gave information and guidance to BHG regarding the Amalur IP, but it didn't produce any assets for Reckoning, the source, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

In terms of the day-to-day work, the Rhode Island team "didn't work on it at all".

"Reckoning was developed with EA publishing money, NOT Rhode Island tax dollars," the source said.

"[Reckoning] had nothing to do with the USD $50 million dollars from Rhode Island. That money went directly to the MMO project."

Project Copernicus was supposed to launch before Reckoning. The latest launch date announced was June 2013.
