Happy Wars, a multiplayer online battle arena title coming to Xbox Live Arcade, will be the platform’s first free-to-play game according to Japanese gaming site 4Gamer.

4Gamer states that Xbox Live gold members will be able to download the game for free, and then purchase new items and character customisations via microtransactions.

Although the game’s official site lists its price as “to be determined”, developer Toylogic’s president Yoichi Take indirectly confirmed the game’s free-to-play nature when he responded to tweets about how such as system would affect the game’s balance.

“I can’t talk a lot for various reasons. We’re really paying attention to the online matching system, and making those items never break game balances,” he said.

Happy Wars features 15-on-15 multiplayer battles, a bot mode, and a campaign mode.

It is expected to be released this spring, exclusively on Xbox Live.
