Popular ARMA 2 mod DayZ has had its security breached, and a file with the potential to turn the game’s servers into a botnet was uploaded before the file host was shut down.
“A person has gained access to our main email account which have details listed for our FTP’s, etc. He then uploaded a malicious application to the US file host which has since been taken offline,” an official announcement explained.
Users who downloaded the file, named dayz_auto_updater.exe, from the US mirror have been advised to scan their computer for viruses, and to visit ThreatExpert for further instruction if the file is not located by a virus detector.
Players have been advised to change their forum account passwords as a precaution, following a forum attack.
The person responsible for both incidents was identified and banned from the game, and legal action is currently being considered by the DayZ team.
