Sony has filed a patent for “methods, systems, and computer programs” that convert TV commercials into interactive games.

Under the system, adverts could include an interactive mini-game that is playable using PS3 peripherals such as the Move, Eye, or Dual Shock controller.

The interactive ads would either play in designated breaks in programming, or would be overlaid on top of the current program.

“In a preferred embodiment, the termination of the interactive mini-game commercial is set within a fixed time period commensurate with traditional spot television advertising,” reads the patent application.

According to illustrations within the patent filing, ads could be sped up or dismissed by viewers should they choose to interact with them—by repeating the advertiser’s name, or completing a short on-screen task, for example.

Last year, Sony filed a patent for technology that paused games to deliver advertising to players.
