Microsoft doesn’t require indie developers to be exclusive to the Xbox One console the way it does with the Xbox 360, but one of the company’s rules is causing some smaller developers to look elsewhere.
The Xbox One’s indie program, ID@Xbox, insists that developers release games on the Xbox One on the same date as other platforms.
However, the company waited until July to change its rules regarding self-publishing on the Xbox One, at which point many indie studios had already signed up with PlayStation instead.
To remedy this, Microsoft added a loophole: games signed up to Xbox One before Gamescom in August were allowed to come out later on Xbox One, thus allowing indies more time to get to grips with the console.
This led to Dutch studio Vlambeer (Ridiculous Fishing, Serious Sam: The Random Encounter) to hastily sign its upcoming game Nuclear Throne to the PlayStation 4 before Gamescom in order to have more time to work on the Xbox One version.
Grand Theft Auto Online’s free Deathmatch and Race Creators tool is entering beta this week via a free title update.
The beta gives players access to some of the same tools as Rockstar’s game design and development team so they may create “custom blood-soaked gunfights, high-octane street races, screaming jet dogfights and more”.
Deathmatches and Races can then be published via Rockstar Games Social Club for the whole community to discover, download, play, rate and share.
The patent paperwork for what looks like a new Move controller has surfaced online.
Filed in June 2012, the patent application concerns something called a “Flat Joystick Controller”, which resembles a Move wand but also includes a touch pad.
The PlayStation 4’s default controller, DualShock 4, has limited Move-like capabilities across two axis, but its distance from the PlayStation Camera cannot be detected.
A firmware update for the Cronus Max peripheral adapter has made it possible to use a number of unsupported peripherals on the Xbox One.
The Cronus Max is a small cross over device that allows unofficial peripherals to be used on consoles. It also allows said controllers to be mapped differently, and macros to be saved.
The company has released a video showing a mouse and keyboard, fight and flight sticks, and even Sony’s DualShock 4 working with an Xbox One console.
Electronic Arts is one of the best places to work in America, says the Human Rights Campaign.
A new report that rated American corporations on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender workplace equality scored EA 100 percent, and dubbed the publisher one of the “Best Places To Work 2014”.
“We are extremely proud of this achievement that recognises corporate policies and practices that demonstrate a commitment to LGBT equality and inclusion,” said EA on its blog.
Eight tech companies have called on governments around the world to regulate online spying, and lobbied for the US government to lead the way.
As reported by Ars Technica, the companies – Microsoft, Google, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, AOL, and LinkedIn – are pressing governments to limit spying to specific targets, create a legal framework for online spying that has better checks and balances, and let service providers publish more detailed information about surveillance requests.
The group also called for free data flow across borders, allowing companies and people to access "lawfully available information that is stored outside of the country".
The prankster behind the fake "Fallout 4" reveal site, thesurvivor2299, has explained why he did it in a Reddit Ask Me Anything.
The perpetrator, who describes himself as a “prick” and a “douche”, said he carried out the hoax in an attempt to force Fallout publisher Bethesda to reveal some information regarding the future of the much-loved series.
“Some men just want to watch the world burn. I wanted to force Bethesda to reveal something during VGX, and bring [the Reddit] Fallout community together (for at least 3 weeks). Unfortunately, this plan failed.”

It serves as a prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
A detailed report in the Guardian claims that security agencies in the United Kingdom and United States are involved in heavy monitoring of online games and networks, including World of Warcraft and Xbox Live.
The report cites as-yet unreleased secret dossiers obtained and leaked to the paper by Edward Snowden, which contain evidence the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and the United States’ National Security Agency (NSA) have collaborated heavily on information gathering in gaming.
"The agencies, the documents show, have built mass-collection capabilities against the Xbox Live console network, which boasts more than 48 million players," the report reads.
